About Dr. Shortridge

Dr. James Shortridge earned his undergraduate degree in Spanish from Brigham Young University and his medical degree from A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Missouri before joining Utah Cancer Specialists in 2016.

His interest in oncology began during his first year of residency while caring for patients on an inpatient oncology unit. He was deeply impacted by the optimism, kindness, and hope he saw in patients facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances. Those experiences inspired him to pursue a career in medical oncology.

Dr. Shortridge believes his role is to give patients the information they need to understand their treatment options and make decisions that reflect their individual goals and priorities. He approaches care as a partnership, providing guidance, support, and resources throughout each patient’s cancer journey. His osteopathic training also influences his commitment to caring for the whole person rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis.

Originally from Colorado, Dr. Shortridge has longstanding ties to Utah through his years at BYU and family in the Salt Lake area. Outside of work, he enjoys mountain biking throughout Utah, skiing, hiking, and spending time with his wife and three children. He can also be found attempting to keep up with his kids at video games, watching monster trucks, and attending his wife’s community theater performances.
