Chronic Leukemias

Long-term management of chronic lymphocytic and chronic myeloid leukemias.

Overview

Chronic leukemias — including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) — are slow-growing blood cancers that often require long-term management rather than aggressive upfront treatment.

CML has been transformed by tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and CLL treatment has been revolutionized by BTK inhibitors and BCL-2 inhibitors. Our hematologists are experienced in selecting the right therapy and monitoring for optimal long-term outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does chronic leukemia always need treatment?

Not always. Many CLL patients are monitored with a 'watch and wait' approach until treatment criteria are met. CML typically requires treatment at diagnosis with a TKI.

Can CML be cured?

While most CML patients take TKI therapy long-term, some patients who achieve deep molecular remission may be eligible for treatment-free remission trials.
