Clinical Trials (START Program)
Access to cutting-edge clinical trials and investigational treatments through the START Mountain Region program.
Overview
Utah Cancer Specialists has been committed to advancing cancer care through clinical research for more than 25 years. We manage over 50 active clinical trials at any given time, spanning all phases of development from early Phase I through Phase III.
Through the START Mountain Region program — established in 2020 and led by Dr. Justin Call — we offer Utah's only dedicated community-based early-phase clinical trial site, part of the world's largest Phase I medical oncology research program. Patients who have exhausted standard options or want access to the most novel therapies can explore trials right here in Utah.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a carefully designed research study that tests new treatments in patients. All trials are reviewed by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and participation is always voluntary.
Will I receive a placebo?
Most cancer clinical trials do not use placebos. When a placebo arm is included, patients always receive at least the current standard of care.
How do I find out if I'm eligible?
Contact our clinical research team at 801.907.4750 (START) or 801.281.6864 (UCS Trials), or ask your oncologist about trial options at your next visit.
