Dale measures his life in rivers. Forty years of early mornings, waders, and the particular quiet of moving water. So when persistent night sweats and a swollen lymph node turned out to be non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his first question wasn’t about survival rates. It was: “Will I fish again?”
“My oncologist didn’t laugh,” Dale says. “He said, ‘That’s the goal. Let’s build the treatment around getting you back on the water.’ That was the moment I trusted him.”
Treatment was hard — six cycles of chemotherapy through a Utah winter. The care team at the Ogden clinic scheduled his infusions so his strongest days landed on weekends, when his son could drive him to the Weber River just to watch it run. By spring, watching had turned back into wading.
Three years cancer-free, Dale ties his own flies again and has taught both grandsons to cast. “People ask me what beating cancer feels like,” he says. “It feels like cold water around your knees at sunrise. It feels like being exactly where you belong.”
